The Struggle to Become a State, 1850-1912 (Introduction)
New Mexico has been part of the Spanish empire for more than two hundred years. It was also part of
Mexico for another twenty-five years. Before Mexico was conquered by Th U.S. in the Mexican-American War
of 1846-1848. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and that is what ended the war. After being conquered
by America it had to wait another sixty-six years before finally getting statehood, so it was just territory. But
before that when New Mexico applied for statehood they had 61,547 population and you had to have 60,000
but still did not become a state and it took many tries after that. The Revolt of 1847 started with a large group of
New Mexicans converged on Governor Bent's home in Taos. A second group of of rebels killed five Americans
in Mora, on the east side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. More than insurrectionists advanced toward Santa
Fe, intent on recapturing New Mexico from the Americans. within days people were calling it the Revolt of. The
Protocol of Querétaro was on 30 May 1848, when the two countries exchanged ratifications of the treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo, they further negotiated a three-article protocol to explain the amendments. The New
Mexico Campaign was a military operation of the Trans-Mississippi Theater of the American Civil War from
February to April 1862 in which Confederate Brigadier General Henry Hopkins Sibley invaded the northern New
Mexico Territory in an attempt to gain control of the Southwest. There many indian wars in New Mexico
like Cienega Affair, Battle of Valverde, Battle of Glorieta Pass, and Battle of Albuquerque. There was also
the Defeat of the Navajos and Mescalero Apaches.
